I have been collecting images of storefronts and older signage for some years. I love the varied typography, the retro color palette and the specialization of services. Now the larger supermarkets offer one stop shopping, taking over from the hardware store, the electrics store, the store selling only tablecloths, the candle store. Some of the storefronts in my images no longer exist, especially in the Baixa area. There is huge pressure on these older businesses from changing markets, real estate developers and the rise of new hotels in the city center. Recently MUDE museum held an exhibition of mostly neon signage that has been salvaged from these sites. The first sign from “Tarantela”, a pasteleria in Estefânia, Lisbon is now hanging in the MUDE exhibit. Context is everything and almost absent from the exhibit were images of the signs in their original locations. I was thankful I had photographed it many years ago. Many of my images of non-functioning neon signs were taken during the day.

as it used to be….
