Wednesday, International Women’s day I gave myself the day off to look for street gardens in Alfama. One of the older neighbourhoods that predates the Lisbon earthquake, it has plenty of narrow alleys, stairs, steps, patios and irregular shaped squares or rather spaces that open out in the densely built street patterns. It is in these older neighbourhoods that you are more likely to see potted gardens, small collections of plants cared for and assembled in a hodge-podge of containers, fruit boxes and upturned paint cans. There is no overall design, but the compositions of these “gardens” are beautiful and all the more for creating ad-hoc non-city designed green streetscapes. And laundry – always laundry.
